Making the best of my wardrobe - occasion wear

Some affiliate links used.

Whist preparing my last blog post on summer dresses it occurred to me that should I be invited to an occasion that I already have a few of pieces in my wardrobe that I could transform into occasion wear. I'd prefer to shop my own wardrobe than to splurge on a new outfit that in all likelihood I wouldn't get too many opportunities to wear. I'd be hard-pressed to get #30wears out of some of my dressier dresses so just by tweaking them by adding a jacket and some accessories means I will get some extra wears out of them! Occasions like weddings, christenings and parties are lovely experiences and my way of thinking is that I prefer to be able to buy a more generous gift because I haven't had to shell out for a new outfit!

I have a couple of colourful dresses that I think really lend themselves to occasion wear. The first is this red Whistles dress. I prefer to wear this with flat sandals as I do like a maxi dress to sweep the floor..... for an occasion I would go with gold. Metallics accessories can really elevate a look I believe!

I bought these tie-up gold sandals recently from H&M as I knew they would prove useful!

Next I added a gold belt - this slinky belt is something that I've had for years (it was from Warehouse). It's absolutely perfect for dressing something simple up. I wouldn't go too mix-matchy with a bag so I've plumped for a bit of leopard print with gold chain strap and hardware for a bit of contrast.

I have found similar below though!

And just to finish it off - a white blazer. Mine is from Zara - purchased a couple of seasons ago but it's thankfully it's style they seem to bring out year after year so I'm able to link it below! Such a versatile jacket to have in your wardrobe....it looks just as great with a cami, jeans and heels for a night out!

I've found a couple of alternatives to the Whistles dress - this one is more pink than red but the style is very similar.

Love this red one too...... this would be such a useful dress!

I've used the same formula for the second dress. This green Oysho dress is a midi length and so I've gone with a block heeled sandal as it I feel it needs something a bit higher. And of course......the leopard print bag again!

Oysho have a very similar dress again this summer.............

And these sandals are doppelgängers for my own pair (I purchased mine from Primark at the beginning of 2019).
La Redoute Sandals (these are wide fit - these would look lovely too though and are a great price!)

Again I would pop the Zara white blazer over the dress......if a jacket was required!

With the addition of a wool cream coat and a shoe as opposed to a sandal I could wear this to an occasion in the cooler spring/autumn months as well!

I hope I've given you a few ideas of how to shop your wardrobe for occasion wear! I get a real sense of satisfaction knowing that I can cobble together a special outfit from what's already in my wardrobe! I have also done a video - see here.

Next time I'll be back sharing how I plan my outfits on a daily basis......I do like to think about what I'm going to wear in advance......it saves time to be organised.

Be back again soon, Michelle x
