wise style words

Last week I finally got around to reading the Garance Dore book I was given for Christmas. I had a had a quick flick through the Love Style Life book but I hadn't read any of the chapters in depth. When I got to the section on style these wise words literally jumped off the page at me.
*Not wanting to stand out too much.*
When I was a teenager my mum had an brilliant job, she worked full time and always dressed immaculately. Although I was immensely proud of her (and still am!) I was embarrassed whenever she came to school for anything because I just wanted her to look like the other mums in their stretchy ski pants and baggy sweaters (this was the 80's!!). I think the seeds were sewn back then for my school run style. I do worry about how I might make my daughter feel by drawing too much attention to myself!
Klaxon please! Another statement from Garance that I applaud.
*Finding out what works for you and not being afraid to say no to everything else*
Thank you for your permission Garance, I needed that.
Last but not least.
*Trends only if they work with your current wardrobe*.
Doesn't look as though I'll be doing the Granny shoes this season then.
Anyway all of the above totally resonates with me and so I shall go forth, hopefully staying on the style straight and narrow.

Ok, so here's what I think has become my signature style at the moment. Coat, knitwear or sweatshirt, skinny jeans and trainers. It's not rocket science but that's basically what I've worn everyday this week and been very happy in. It's become my uniform. Now that I had this kind of justification in hand, there were a couple of purchases of my signature staples. Quelle horreur though! They are not something that would go down well with the stylish Parisians who advise us to steer clear of logos.....as you are not a billboard! Quote borrowed from How to be a Parisian!
Anyway before I digress any further, onto my first purchase. My lovely friend Vikki bought this to my attention! She messaged me to say *I can really see you in this* and boy am I glad she did as I really love it and I predict you will get sick of seeing me in it.

Thanks to Vikki's eagle eyes I got a brilliant bargain as she spotted it on the Bella Freud website reduced to £54! Obviously I flexed the credit card straightaway and lucky I did as I reckon I had the last one as an hour later it showed up as sold out! I took a chance as there was only XS or XL left, I plumped for XS as it was described as oversize and thankfully it's just perfect! They do have some small left on Coggles here.
I loved wearing this early in the week like this....

.......which made me go in search of something similar. I just happened to stumble across this whilst starting my jeans research in earnest on Thursday and I knew it had to come home with me. Now I have added a much needed bit of colour to my wardrobe!

I love this colour too so I shall be casting my over this little beauty.

And I'm still trying to find a shade of pink that might work for me, I'm told blush would be a better shade so I need to take a closer look at this sweatshirt.

So that's my transitional signature look to take me into Spring. How is yours shaping up? What style is your go-to uniform?

Sticking with the signature outfit theme....what I wore the rest of the week

My wardrobe champions!

Hands down my wardrobe champions are my jeans. Skinny jeans to be exact! With my current *SAHM.....stay at home mum* lifestyle I find myself reaching for my jeans pretty much everyday. I do dabble with a boyfriend every now and again but the hubby isn't keen ;0) says he doesn't like a saggy bum.....fair enough! My go-to store for jeans is Topshop and my favourite style are the Jamie's. I think I'm right in saying that these are their bestsellers and it's not difficult to see why for all us school run mums! For a start they are high waisted, they've got a good bit of stretch thus making them comfy but maintaining their shape whilst keeping all my wobbly bits under control. Job done! They are also very skinny around the ankle too which is how I like to wear mine with boots and hi-tops. I have 4 pairs at the last count and I'm currently coveting this mid blue pair for Spring.

I have it on good authority the the Toppers Leigh style is also very good too(thanks to my sis)! They are more of a mid-rise, the fabric is lighter and they are pitched as more of a super soft denim. More of a jegging material in my book but I think these will be a great weight denim-wise during the Summer.

I'm not entirely faithful to Topshop for jeans......my favourite pair of ripped/distressed skinnies come from Zara. I bought mine about a year ago and I have to say they have fared very well so far. The rips on the Zara jeans are backed with fabric which can only be a good thing as no one wants to see more of my flesh than neccesary! That said, the fabric has come away on some of the holes but they still look good and shape-wise they are still going strong! They get an airing every week!  Mine were around the £40 mark but these look pretty similar and they are more reasonable price-wise at £25.99...I am considering getting a pair of these too as back up for my much loved pair.

Another style that I have a couple of pairs of, also from Zara are their jeggings from the TRF range. They have a great amount of stretch and are super comfy, though I would recommend to try and get them with belt loops if you can! Unless you don't mind hoick-ing them up now and again as I've found they can get a bit baggy around the waist. I can live with that though as these grey ones I have are a bargain at £17.99.

Another store that I've previously enjoyed a lot of jean-success with is Gap. I have a couple of pairs of Always Skinny which I've had a few years now but they still come out every Spring as these are not so tight around the ankles and I like this style better with my skate shoes or Adidas Stan Smith's.

Do you have a favourite brand or store that is your go to for jeans? What style do you tend to favour.....are you also a skinny jeans girl?

zippy kicks!

Another purchase inspired by Insta this week! I really love the way the gorgeous French Instagrammers pull outfits together with such great details! Quite often I find that their shoes, bags or accessories are what make their outfits really stand out to me.

I saw this amazing outfit which is right up my street (though I'm not sure I could pull it off with such aplomb!) and I could see that these fab Converse kicks would be a perfect addition to my transitional Spring wardrobe. I'm trying to brighten up my outfits, and these vintage looking hi-tops have already been spot-on for pulling a few lighter ensembles together.

Since I've been on this mission to lighten things up a little colour-wise in my wardrobe I decided to try a bit of pink after seeing this gorgeous Gap sweater on my lovely mate @SusieSoSo. I dashed into town to pick one up for myself and took it home to try it out.

Unfortunately it confirmed my suspicions about me and colour not really being the greatest of friends. I popped this pic on Instagram and asked for honest opinions and it made up my mind that this needed to be returned as I am not feeling the pink love on me.

my winter wardrobe unsung heroes!

There are some basics in my wardrobe that make an appearance every week but that never get the praise they deserve! So this post I'm celebrating my unsung heroes.......my Merino sweaters! I have a few classic styles that come out year after year. They wash and wear well and have become one of my most used wardrobe staples!
First up is the Uniqlo polo neck which is on offer at the moment so now is the time to buy! There aren't the full range of sizes in each colour.....but it's worth me saying here that the last two Uniqlo sweaters I have bought I've sized up and gone for a large for a more slouchier feel as I find they run quite small. I love the way that Uniqlo have layered this one over the stripes....an idea I may have steal although I've trawled their website and I fear these stripes have already sold out!

Uniqlo extra fine Merino polo neck
Back in October I bought a Uniqlo navy extra fine merino v neck sweater, this is the other one I bought in a size large. This looks great on it's own or with a shirt underneath.

Last year I stocked up on a couple of extra fine merino sweaters one v-neck and one crew. I stuck with neutral dark grey and black. This year I've found these to be a fab extra layer under looser-style pullovers.

A couple of years back I purchased a Gap black v-neck merino jumper that was a longer, looser style. This has been a real gem......I find the slightly deeper v neck is the most flattering style on me. These are greatly reduced, down to £9.99 with most sizes still available in black, not much left in the navy version though.

Last but not least I do have a couple of the J Crew Tippi-style 3/4 length sleeve sweaters. Again these are very useful for layering. This jumper has been perfect for wearing under my Dorothy Perkins pinafore as it's a bit more fitted than all of the above. I wore this grey one under my big grey Zara roll neck yesterday....see below

What winter basics do have in your wardrobe that come out time and time again?

The thing that struck me whilst checking over this post is how much I wear my jeans too, so next week I'm going to looking at some new skinnies as I think I may have a hole to be filled. I need to get researching a new pair!

insta inspiration!

Now and again I see something on Instagram that I just can't get out of my head. This sends me into a spin....cue hours of internet trawling to find a certain item, only for my search to end in frustration as I can't find what I'm looking for! Don't you just hate that. But! The shopping fairies were smiling down on me this time and by chance I found just what I was looking for!

This also comes in red

I went for navy, I love the red but I have the berry red puffy sleeved sweater from COS and I'm not sure this shade of red would suit me......besides the navy will go with lots of stuff in my wardrobe.

Here's the Insta pic that inspired me.....

Pretty similar isn't it?! Inspiration courtesy of the gorgeous Audrey Lombard, whose sweater is Leon & Harper.....nowhere to be found on the internet! I just happened to see this post a couple of days later on the Banana Republic feed and hey presto the sweater went straight in my basket! I would normally think to check out BR website so I could have totally missed this fab homage to the Leon & Harper one!

I've ordered a size small.....I missed my delivery yesterday so I'm hoping to get my hands on the sweater tomorrow and I shall share on Instagram!

What do you think of my latest find? Please tell me I am not alone in spending hours locating my current object of desire?!

As always.....the usual outfit round-up!
